Former NFL star and Super Bowl champion Barry Wilburn has passed away at the age of 62, according to confirmation from his family. Wilburn tragically lost his life in a house fire in Memphis, Tennessee, where emergency responders found him unresponsive at the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Born on December 9, 1963, in Memphis, Barry Wilburn rose to prominence as a standout defensive back. He played high school football at Melrose High School before continuing his career at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where his talent quickly caught the attention of NFL scouts.
Wilburn was selected by the Washington Redskins in the eighth round of the 1985 NFL Draft and went on to become one of the most impactful defenders of his era. His breakout season came in 1987, when he led the entire NFL with nine interceptions and earned First-Team All-Pro honors.
That same season, Wilburn played a crucial role in Washington’s championship run, helping the team secure victory in Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos. He recorded two interceptions in the Super Bowl, contributing to the team’s dominant 42–10 win and cementing his place in NFL history.
Over the course of his professional career, Wilburn also played for the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, and later competed in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He finished his NFL career with 20 interceptions and over 240 tackles, earning respect across the league for his intelligence, athleticism, and competitive spirit.
