Ranken — affectionately nicknamed “The Clobberer” — was known for his powerful, distinctive drumming and his role in shaping the band’s sound. He joined The Pogues in 1983, shortly after the group formed in London, and went on to play on all their major albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His contributions extended beyond drums to percussion, harmonica, and occasional vocals, helping define the band’s fusion of Irish folk and punk rock.
In a statement on social media, the remaining band members wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ranken, drummer, founding member, and heartbeat of The Pogues. Andrew, thank you for everything — for your friendship, your wit, your generosity of spirit, and of course for the music, forever a true friend and brother.” They also expressed their love and condolences to his family during this difficult time.
Ranken’s influence was felt on some of The Pogues’ most celebrated recordings, including classics like Rum, Sodomy & The Lash and the beloved Christmas song “Fairytale of New York.” Fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to share memories of his energy, talent, and the powerful rhythm that drove the band.

Although the cause of his death has not been officially confirmed, reports note that Ranken had suffered from health challenges in recent years, including chronic respiratory illness. He had stepped back from some recent performances due to his declining health, but his impact on music and his community remained profound.
Andrew Ranken’s passing marks another significant loss for The Pogues’ tight‑knit musical family, following the earlier death of frontman Shane MacGowan in 2023. His legacy as the rhythmic heart of the band and a beloved figure in punk and folk music will be remembered by fans around the world.
