During the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, he was considered among the world’s elite players and earned the nickname “The Best of the West” for challenging the dominance of Soviet champions. His creative and attacking style made him a fan favorite across international tournaments.
Throughout his career, Timman competed against legendary players such as Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, reaching the 1993 FIDE World Chess Championship final. He also won numerous prestigious tournaments and became a nine-time Dutch national champion.
Beyond competition, Timman contributed greatly to chess as an author and analyst, publishing books and sharing deep insights into the game he loved. His influence extended far beyond the chessboard.
