Santiago’s journey from war‑torn childhood to cultural influence was remarkable. Born in Riga, Latvia during World War II, she and her family survived tremendous hardship before eventually relocating to the United States. It was in America that her artistic talents flourished, first working with American Greetings and later with Hallmark, where she developed the character that would define her legacy. 
In 1984, Santiago introduced Rainbow Brite, a cheerful and vibrant character designed to bring color and joy into children’s lives. The concept quickly expanded from greeting cards into an animated television series, toy line, and merchandise that became a staple of 1980s pop culture. Millions of children grew up watching Rainbow Brite and collecting her brightly dressed dolls. 
Colleagues and friends remembered Santiago not just for her creativity but also for her warm personality and artistic depth. Illustrator Muriel Fahrion, a close friend who worked alongside her early in her career, described Santiago as a force of imagination whose influence extended well beyond a single character. Her creative spirit brought smiles to generations of fans and inspired other artists in the industry.
