Downeyโ€™s remarkable collegiate career began in 1960 when he joined the Illinois Fighting Illini, and he quickly established himself as the teamโ€™s cornerstone. Over three seasons (1961โ€“1963), he was named team MVP each year, leading the Illini in both scoring and rebounding throughout his collegiate tenure. His consistency and leadership helped propel the team to one of its most successful eras.

Perhaps the enduring highlight of Downeyโ€™s career came on February 16, 1963, when he set a program-record 53 points in a single game against Indiana โ€” a mark that still stands decades later and is celebrated in Illinois basketball lore. For this reason, the State Farm Center features a courtside club named Club 53 in his honor.

In addition to his scoring feats, Downey finished his career with 1,360 points and 790 rebounds, leaving Illinois as its all-time leading scorer and rebounder at the time. His career averages of 18.9 points and 11.0 rebounds per game remain among the top figures in school history, reflecting his dominance on both ends of the floor.

Beyond pure athletic performance, Downey was recognized for his academic achievement as well, receiving the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1963 โ€” an award given to athletes who excel both in sports and in scholarship. After college, he was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors in the 1963 NBA Draft, though he chose to pursue a career outside professional basketball.

His legacy has been cemented through numerous honors: he was elected to the Illini Menโ€™s Basketball All-Century Team, had his jersey honored at the State Farm Center in 2008, and was inducted into the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Alumni and fans around the nation continue to celebrate his contributions to the sport and the community he helped shape.
