Ahn’s final hospitalisation came after a sudden medical emergency on December 30, 2025, when he collapsed at his home after choking on food and was rushed to the emergency room in an unconscious state. Despite efforts by medical staff and a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit, he did not regain consciousness.
Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Ahn was one of South Korea’s most prolific and respected actors. He made his debut as a child actor in 1957 with director Kim Ki‑young’s Twilight Train and went on to appear in well over 130 films across genres, from drama and historical epics to comedy and action. His body of work includes enduring classics such as Two Cops, Silmido, Radio Star, Good Windy Day and Hansan: Rising Dragon.
Known not just for his talent but also for his integrity and positive public image, Ahn earned enormous respect both inside and outside the film industry. He was the recipient of numerous major awards in Korea, including multiple Best Actor honours, and served in leadership roles such as chairman of artist organisations while also contributing to cultural foundations and charitable causes.
Ahn’s health struggles in later years were well‑documented. He had been battling blood cancer since 2019, and while he initially responded well to treatment and was declared in remission, subsequent follow‑ups revealed a recurrence of the disease. Despite this, he continued to stay connected to his work and the film community as long as his health permitted.
The news of his passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from across South Korea and around the world, with fans and fellow actors mourning the loss of a figure many regard as foundational to modern Korean cinema. Funeral arrangements and memorial events are expected to take place in Seoul in the coming days, offering the public a chance to pay their respects to a beloved cultural icon.
May he rest in peace — sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who were inspired by his remarkable life and work.
