Maurice Williams is a school bus driver from the Washington, D.C. area who recently became widely known after winning a $5 million lottery prize from a Maryland scratch-off ticket.See More…
He was on his way to work when he stopped at a 7-Eleven in Hyattsville, Maryland, to cash in a smaller $50 prize he had previously won. Instead of just taking the money, he used it to buy another lottery ticket — and that ticket ended up being the $5 million winner.
At first, he didn’t even realize he had won. He only noticed the winning match after scanning the ticket, which left him in shock and disbelief. He said he had to “get his head straight” because it felt unreal in the moment.
One of the most interesting details from his story is that the winning number matched his age — he had just turned 59, and the matching number on the ticket was also 59. He saw this as a strange coincidence that made the win even more memorable
After realizing he had won, he immediately called his mother to share the news. She was the first person he spoke to, and she helped calm him down while he processed what had happened.
Even after winning millions, Williams didn’t quit his job right away. He simply continued his workday and later contacted the lottery office to claim the prize properly, showing how stunned he still was by the win.
When asked about his plans, he said his first priority is to buy a house for his mother. After that, he plans to save and carefully think about what to do with the rest of the money instead of rushing into big decisions
