Despite the challenges, Chase showed strong academic ability. He graduated as valedictorian from the Stockbridge School in 1962. He then briefly attended Haverford College before transferring to Bard College, where he completed a degree in English in 1967. During this time, he also developed a strong interest in music and comedy.
At Bard College, he played drums in a band with future music legends Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who later formed Steely Dan. This period was important for his creative development, as he began mixing music, performance, and comedy. It was the foundation of his later entertainment career.
Before becoming famous, Chase worked many different jobs, including manual labor, writing, and small entertainment projects. These experiences gave him real-world material that he later used in his comedy. His early struggles and odd jobs helped shape his relatable yet sharp comedic voice.
His big break came in the mid-1970s when he joined the original cast of Saturday Night Live (SNL). He became known for his deadpan humor and physical comedy, especially as the first anchor of “Weekend Update.” This made him one of the first breakout stars of SNL and a household name in America.
After SNL, he transitioned into Hollywood films and became one of the biggest comedy stars of the 1980s, starring in movies like Caddyshack and the National Lampoon’s Vacation series. Even though his career had ups and downs, his early childhood experiences and rebellious school years played a major role in shaping his comedic identity.
