Sir Tim first rose to public attention in the 1960s as a student activist, campaigning passionately against the Vietnam War and apartheid before entering local politics. His journey led him to serve as Mayor of Waitematā City in the 1980s and later — most famously — as Mayor of Invercargill, where he became a beloved and larger-than-life figure for nearly 30 years.
Throughout his tenure, Sir Tim was known not just for his political achievements but for his infectious smile, charisma, and people-first leadership style. Residents remember him not just as a mayor, but as a voice for the everyday person — a champion for the underdog whose enthusiasm helped redefine Invercargill’s identity.

Leaders from across New Zealand paid tribute to Sir Tim’s life and work. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described him as a devoted public servant whose charm and dedication made a lasting impact, while fellow politicians and friends remembered him as an extraordinary and compassionate community figure.

Plans for Sir Tim’s public funeral service have been announced: it will be held at the Civic Theatre in Invercargill on 16 January, offering friends, family, and citizens alike a chance to honor his life and contributions. The ceremony will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

Sir Tim Shadbolt’s legacy — marked by bold ideas, heartfelt service, and unforgettable personality — will continue to resonate across New Zealand for generations to come. His leadership reshaped communities, inspired countless people, and reminded the world of the difference one dedicated individual can make.
