According to local authorities, the sand tunnel collapsed while the boys were inside, burying them under several feet of sand. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the boysโ parents reported them missing and traced a cellphone signal to the park. Rescue crews worked tirelessly to reach them, but the unstable conditions made the operation extremely challenging.
Derrick Hubbard Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. George Watts was pulled from the sand and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, George later died from his injuries, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
