She died peacefully on 15 January 2026 at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, where she had lived for decades alongside Queen Sofía. The Spanish Royal Household confirmed the news, noting that she was surrounded by close family in her final moments.

Born on 11 May 1942 in Cape Town, Princess Irene was the youngest child of King Paul I of Greece and Queen Frederica. Despite her royal status, she chose a life away from public power, dedicating herself to intellectual, cultural, and humanitarian interests.

Princess Irene never married and had no children, but she was widely admired for her discretion, kindness, and strong bond with her sister, the former Queen of Spain. She was known for her deep interest in philosophy, religion, and social causes.

Her funeral services were held in Athens, and she was laid to rest at the Royal Cemetery of Tatoi, alongside members of the Greek royal family. Tributes have poured in across Europe, honoring a princess remembered not for the crown she wore, but for the dignity and humility she carried throughout her life.
